On Tuesday, a man called Jason from Addaction (a British specialist drug and alcohol treatment charity) came in and spoke to Year 6 about the detrimental damage that people can do to their bodies through drugs, smoking and alcohol, as part of our Science topic ‘Body Pump.’
The children learnt many facts such as: alcohol can kill off brain cells, smoking can cause your heart to stop working and that you can get prescriptive drugs which can affect you, but in a good way.
The children were shocked to learn about a man who was addicted to cannabis and red bull. He went on a treatment programme and it was noted that it was easier to get him off the cannabis than the red bull that is just caffeine. When speaking about caffeine, the children were made aware of the effects that everyday products such as chocolate, energy drinks and coca cola can have on your body. They were told that you may not sleep well, even if you had the drink earlier in the day because the caffeine acts as a stimulant and keeps you awake!
The children had a fantastic afternoon thanks to Jason, who was very interactive and great with them!
