PSHE

Personal, Social, Health and Economic (PSHE) education is an important and necessary part of all pupils’ education. While at Primary School pupils’ start to make sense of the world around them and begin to think what makes them unique.

At MFCJS we use our PSHE education programme to equip pupils with a sound understanding of risk and with the knowledge and skills necessary to make safe and informed decisions.

We use PSHE education to build, where appropriate, on the statutory content already outlined in the national curriculum, the basic school curriculum and in statutory guidance on: drug education, financial education, sex and relationship education (SRE) and the importance of physical activity and diet for a healthy lifestyle.

The programme is based on three core themes:

Health and wellbeing

Relationships

Living in the wider world

As an approach to PSHE we have trained staff to be able to deliver a programme called ‘Friends for Life’ (FFL), which provides content at an age appropriate level to cover the core themes, as well as develop resilience and positive life-coping skills to enable pupils to deal with whatever life throws at them.

These 3 themes are also addressed through work covered in other areas of the curriculum and through assemblies and learning enrichment activities we provide.

When pupils are in Y6 we deliver SRE education. Although we are not legally required to do this in Primary Education, as a school we believe that it is important to provide children with knowledge in SRE, as a part of preparing them for the next stage of their education, when they move up to Secondary School.
