Year 3 curriculum 2017-2018
This term, the children will study myths and legends, language poetry, newspaper reports and different types of letters. To do this we will be basing our work on many of the Greek myths, including Daedalus and Icarus and Perseus and Medusa, where we will create our own endings, create our own mythical creatures and describe the settings that they live in. We will also be working on poetry and using video links as a basis for writing letters. We will continue to work on and develop our sentence structure, punctuation and composition.
We have two guided reading sessions planned each week, whereby the children will be studying and comprehending a range of fiction and non-fiction texts, supported by adults.
This year, we will be looking at a range of mathematical areas, including:
Add and subtract numbers mentally, e.g.
We will begin the term by learning about animals and humans, in particular their diet and skeletons.
We will also be learning about plants this term, including the different parts of the plant, the requirements of the flowering plants, and the way in which water is transported within plants and the life cycle of flowering plants (pollination, seed formation and seed dispersal).
In Computing this term we will be focusing on using word processing applications to practise how to open, type and save documents to different locations. We will also be introducing the children to a Coding program called ‘Kodu’.
For our History topic we will finish our ‘Ancient Egyptians’ lessons and then we will be focusing on the local history of Hazlemere, including the surrounding areas. We will particularly look at how the landscape has changed over time, how the way of living has changed and how a local train line enabled easier access to London.
This term we will be learning about the local geography of the Chilterns including land use and habitats.
Art and DT
This term we will begin our art unit on ‘Fruit and Vegetables’ and then progress onto our DT unit where we will be focusing on Sandwiches.
This term, we will be outdoors for both sessions focusing on Athletics and will be preparing for our Sports Day this Summer term.
After May half term, we will be moving onto sex education. Details of what is taught in Year 3 for this will be sent home in a letter before May half term.
Every week the children will be given Maths and English homework. It will be given out on a Thursday and is expected in the following Tuesday. Your child will have a homework slip stuck into their Home School Books and this is also accessible via the school website. On top of this, we also expect children to be learning their times tables (ready for our weekly Cracking Times Table test) and they are expected to read at least 4 times a week and record this in their Home School Books with an adult signature. We take in Home School Books on Monday, sign them and return them to the children the same day.
Children are given a spelling list to learn on alternate weeks. They are also given statutory spellings to learn as challenge words. The children are expected to learn these thoroughly, and score 8/10 in their test. They are also expected to put two of their words into sentences which we mark in our spelling lessons.
