Year 3 curriculum 2018

Spring Term

This term, we will be looking at Adventure and Mystery stories using a visual stimulus called ‘Something Fishy’. It would be really good for the children to read some adventure and mystery stories of their own to begin to understand the structure of these stories. We will then move onto information texts and language plays. In Guided reading, we will continue to focus on comprehension twice weekly. We will be looking at using new ways to comprehend and understand a text.

This year, we will be looking at a range of mathematical areas, including:

  • Count from 0 in multiples of 4, 8, 50 and 100; finding 10 more or 100 more or less than a given number.
  • Recognise place value of each digit in a 3-digit number (hundreds, tens and ones).
  • Compare and order numbers up to 100.

Add and subtract numbers mentally, e.g.

  • A three digit number and ones
  • A three digit number and tens
  • A three digit number and hundreds
  • Know by heart the 2, 3, 4, 5, 8 and 10 times tables.
  • Multiply and divide two digits by one digit using the times tables that they know.
  • Find simple fractions, such as 1/2, 1/3, 1/4, 1/5, 1/10, of shapes and numbers.
  • Tell the time on an analogue and digital clock to the nearest minute.
  • Know the number of seconds in a minute and the number of days in a year and in each month.
  • Solve number problems using number facts, place value, addition and subtraction, multiplication and division.
  • Recognise right angles, horizontal, vertical, parallel and perpendicular lines.
  • Present data using bar charts, pictograms and tables.

We will be continuing to learn about light and dark, focusing in particular on shadows and how light travels through different materials.

This year, we will be using Scratch to begin to learn about computer programming. We will also be learning about how the internet works and how to be safe online.

This term we will be learning about many different aspects of Ancient Egypt including how they communicated, religious beliefs, the pyramids and culture. We are hoping to have an Ancient Egyptian Day towards the end of the Spring term.

We will learning about rivers around the UK and the world. We will think about how rivers are useful and how they have changed their shape and landscapes over the years.

Art and DT

To start the term we will be looking at the colour wheel and learning about primary, secondary and tertiary colours. We will exploring how to mix paints to create secondary and tertiary colour. After half term, our DT topic will be creating sandwiches and looking at different variations and fillings. The children will have the opportunity to create their own sandwiches.

For indoor PE, we will learning how to use different balances, travelling and varieties of jumps in Gymnastics using apparatus. After half term, we will be doing some dance to link with our Ancient Egyptian theme. In outdoor PE, we will be participating in net and wall games and striking and fielding.

After February half term, Mrs Jones will be teaching the children how to play the recorder. We have enough recorders for everyone, but if anyone has their own at home, then you are welcome to bring them in for these sessions.

In RE this term, the children will be learning about Rules and Routines, beginning with what rules and routines they have and at school. They will then look at how rules affect different religions.

Our theme for this term is Health and Wellbeing where we will focus on school rules for health and safety, who the children can trust and how they can take care of their bodies. We will also be looking at the differences between risk, danger and hazard. After half term, we will be looking at relationships, personal space and how people feel and working collaboratively.
