Year 4 Curriculum 2017-2018
This term we are going to be basing our writing around a video called the Lighthouse Keeper where we will work on story writing and building tension, before moving onto reading ‘The Iron Man’ and writing newspaper reports and persuasive arguments. Just before half term, we will focus on poetry and learning about the Roman Centurion Song, to tie in nicely with our History unit. The second half of the term will start with a BANG as we base our writing on volcanoes, particularly looking at the eruption of Vesuvius and writing diary entries and radio broadcasts as thought we were there at the time! We will then also focus on shape poetry and work on a unit towards Christmas based on a beautiful video about a penguin!
This year we are having a massive push on exposing the children to different language and therefore will be introducing ‘word of the week.’ It would be great if you could support this at home and encourage the children to use the word in their writing, homework as well as orally. It would also be great if you could encourage children to choose challenging texts which will expose them to different language that they could transfer over into their writing. We will be letting you know what our ‘word of the week’ is on the homework slip so keep an eye out for it!
We have two guided reading sessions planned each week, whereby the children will be studying and comprehending a range of fiction and non-fiction texts, supported by adults.
This term, we will be looking at a range of mathematical areas, including:
We will be learning to be Electricity experts this term, learning about electrical appliances and how to use them safety, the different parts of electronic circuits and how they work and we will be experimenting lots with equipment to see whether we can solve a range of tasks, such as making the bulb brighter. After half term, we will be focusing on a topic called ‘animals including humans’ which immerses us into learning about teeth and their functions, as well as how our digestive system works. If the children are lucky, they may also be involved in making a model of the digestive system which can get rather messy!
In Computing, we will be learning about how to search the internet and keep safe online, as part of our e-safety unit and then we will be programming with Scratch which will involve simulations. Towards the end of term, we will move onto using Movie Maker to link our learning in History with Computing.
From September until Christmas we will be learning about the Romans and how they used to live many years ago. We will be discovering roman artefacts, learning about their social structure and organisation and what they did for leisure in their daily lives. We will also be researching the gods and goddesses of the time and learning about what they did for entertainment, as well as learning about the role of the gladiators and Hadrian’s Wall. We will finish the unit by comparing modern day Rome, to that of ancient Rome.
Our Geography topic is very exciting this term as we start with volcanoes! We will be learning about what the Earth is made of, locating volcanoes around the world and then delving deeper into the knowledge of how volcanoes are formed. Fascinatingly, we will be looking at eruptions and famous ones around the world, before debating whether or not it would be a good idea to live near a volcano (I’m sure they would say yes if it meant a volcanic eruption would get them a day off school!)
Art and DT
The first 6 weeks of the term will be our Art unit of ‘Landscapes’ where we will look at different landscapes, match the colour and texture of paint in landscape paintings through mark-making and colour mixing and develop ideas for landscapes, before working with watercolours to create their own landscape. The children will also have the opportunity to look at artists such as Derain, Vlaminck and Braque and try to recreate some of the colours and marks they observe and then work together to create their own shared idea of a Fauve landscape.
The second half of term will be a mixed Art/DT unit based on volcanoes. The children will create some fantastic pieces of art using a range of media, before creating their own 3D volcano model.
Indoor PE is on Tuesday afternoons. Our Indoor PE sessions begin with gymnastics where we will be focusing on balancing. We will learn about good balances, different parts of the body we can use to balance, using equipment to help us balance and then putting this altogether to create and perform gymnastic sequences. After half term, we will begin dance where we will link our electricity science topic to create some funky movements! Outdoor PE will be taught by Premier Sports on a Friday morning who will be starting with invasion games. They will be learning the different skills and how to participate and compete in at least two different games, by understanding how to attack, defend and score efficiently.
Please ensure your children have the correct PE kit for both sessions.
We will be working on our singing this term for both Harvest Assembly and our annual Christmas Production (dates to be confirmed).
Our RE unit begins with learning about pilgrimages before moving onto different types of workshop.
The children get a weekly PSHE session. In the Autumn term we are going to be starting our ‘Health and Wellbeing’ topic. This involves learning about a balanced diet, what influences choices about food, personal hygiene, celebrating achievements and personal strengths and how to manage different feelings. After the half term, we will move on to learning about different kinds of change and loss, risks and dangers, resisting pressure and learning about people who are responsible for helping us stay healthy and safe.
Every week the children will be given Maths and English homework. It will be given out on a Thursday and is expected in the following Tuesday. Your child will have a homework slip stuck into their Home School Books and this is also accessible via the school website. On top of this, we also expect children to be learning their times tables (ready for our weekly Cracking Times Table test) and they are expected to read at least 4 times a week and record this in their Home School Books with an adult signature. We take in Home School Books on Monday, sign them and return them to the children the same day.
