Year 6 Summer Term
This term in English we will be looking at journalistic writing, with the aim of writing our own newspaper article about the Boscastle flooding of 2004. We will also be using past and present tense to write an effective flashback and writing recounts on Britain’s Got Talent. We will be doing lots of writing this term to make sure the children all cover the standards expected of the year group!
This term we will be revising a number of topics such as: fractions, percentages of amounts, area and perimeter, time, ratio and proportion, shape and calculating using the four operations in word problems.
This term we will be covering our topic of light, this will include lots of investigations about how light travels, the angles of light and how we can use light. The children will make and perform their own shadow puppet show.
We will be continuing our topic of the Mayan Civilisation, how people lived, the roles they played in society, the achievements during this time period culminating in the eventual decline of that civilisation.
Our topic of South America continues and looks at trade and industry throughout the country and lastly, an in depth study of a specific South American country.
Art and Design
This term our art and design is linked to our Mayan topic. We will be looking at various styles of Mayan art. The children will be recreating their own Mayan gods, Mayan codices and Mayan masks.
World issues have been our focus this term, for example; the plight of refugees. We will also be covering Sex Education after half term.
Turn It On are continuing to work with the children this term and will be covering Excel and also making their own APPs.
Maths and English homework is given out every Thursday, and is due in on the following Monday. Mental Maths homework is given out every Friday, and is due back in on the following Friday. After half term, project work will be set instead of this.
Spelling tests happen every Monday morning and sentences are due in that day too. Spelling Tests will continue until the end of the year.
Home School Books are checked every Monday, with the expectation that there are at least 4 pieces of reading logged for every week and that a parent has signed that week’s page.
The main focus after half term will be the Year 6 production. A huge amount of time and effort is spent ensuring the children put on a fantastic performance. Children will be auditioning the first Monday back after residential, and rehearsals begin after half term.
