Young Voices 2020

On Wednesday 5th February, 30 extremely excited children plus accompanying staff took part in Young Voices 2020 at the O2 Arena in London.

The adventure began with a smooth journey followed by photo opportunities, outside the Arena, proudly displaying our school banner. The weather was wonderfully sunny, so we took full advantage and enjoyed a picnic lunch outside; watching other schools arrive and taking in the atmosphere.

Once inside the Arena, the children and staff took their seats in readiness for the afternoon rehearsal. Our seats were on the upper tier, and we were incredibly impressed by how some of our children showed fantastic resilience to overcome their fear of heights! Before long the rehearsal began, and we were able to put into practice everything we had been learning since September. It was amazing to sing alongside, not only 8,000 other children but also highly talented, professional musicians as well as the celebrity guests which included: Tony Hadley (of Spandau Ballet fame), Ruti (winner of The Voice 2018) and The Shires (a British country duo). In addition, Andy Instone and his team of Urban Striders were there to keep us all on our toes when it came to the dance moves!

After a break for food, we changed into our Young Voices t-shirts and prepared for the performance itself. The lights went down, and the Arena was transformed into a magical sea of mini torch lights! Everyone sang and danced their hearts out performing songs of all genres such as pop, musical theatre and traditional African folk. A particular highlight was joining the celebrity guests in a Queen medley to acknowledge the legend that was Freddie Mercury, and the success of Bohemian Rhapsody.

A firm song favourite with our choir members, ‘Larger Than Life’, aims to inspire reaching your goals and achieving your dreams. The Young Voices’ ethos also promotes resilience, confidence and inner happiness, which was shown in spades by the children. You did our school and your families proud!

Finally, a huge thank you to all the parents for your support, and to the staff who have been dedicated to weekly rehearsals and those who gave up their time to join us on the day.

Here’s to next year’s Young Voices – the 25th Anniversary! An event not to be missed!
